Why are BMP files so large?

BMP stores essentially raw pixel data — width × height × 3-4 bytes, with little to no compression. A 12-megapixel photo is ~36 MB of pixels. JPEG's compression math reduces the same image to 2-4 MB by discarding detail human vision doesn't miss. BMP's simplicity made sense for 1990s hardware; today it's pure storage waste unless you specifically need uncompressed data.
